How to use LEA Transcript to Teach Learners More Than Just English

This post gives some tips about how to use LEA transcripts to help learners understand more about living in America. In this example I explain how to use a photo prompt to teach about public transportation.

You can teach your learner a lot using LEA transcripts. In this section I will show how you can use a photo to teach your learner about local transportation, for example, in addition to working on writing skills.

As an example, you could begin your session with this picture of Everett Square. You can point out the approaching bus in the lower part of the picture underneath the sign for Sovereign Bank.

First, you ask your learner to respond to this prompt, describing what they see. As they speak, you write down word for word what they say - this becomes your LEA transcript, which serves as a personal textbook that you can use to spot grammar and vocabulary to work on with your learner.

But you can also take the lesson a step further by talking more about a particular topic. In this case, you could teach your learner about local transportation by explaining how to get around Everett square, what the main bus routes to Boston and Malden are, and why to use a Charlie Card.

You can explain that Malden is Everett's neighboring city in the north and that the 106 bus can bring him there. The buses which stop on the opposite side of the road, the 109 and 104 buses, can bring you to Boston. These buses are always overcrowded, as the majority of Everett population is working in Boston.

You  can also explain that  they should prepare the $2 cost beforehand, as the driver does not make change. Or you can explain how the Charlie Card works and how it helps to save money. It costs $70 per month and you can freely travel by bus or train with it. Charlie Cards are distributed at Charlie Card Stores and can also be ordered on-line using this link: https://commerce.mbta.com/feedback.asp.

These are just some examples of ways to use LEA transcripts to teach students more than just English. You can teach learners about important and useful information that can help them in their daily life that they might not know yet - all while practicing and learning English at the same time.

Happy tutoring!
