The Laubach Way To English: The Importance of Cultural Awareness

In this post, I talk about the importance of cultural awareness as described by the Laubach Way To English handbook. I also give a few examples of some cultural differences you may encounter in your tutoring sessions.

While reading through the Laubach Way To English: Tutor Workshop Handbook, I found a section on cultural awareness that I found particularly interesting. Many of us know that there can be big differences in social norms and behavior across cultures. However, I especially liked how this handbook gives examples that show clearly what those differences can look like. Obviously this topic is complex and it isn't possible to generalize entire countries or cultures. But a general understanding of different cultures can still help smooth your tutoring process.

Here is a chart that outlines some of the perceptions people from different cultures might have of Americans, and some that we might have of other cultures. This chart gives you an idea of the kinds of things to be aware of when interacting with your students and to tell your students.

Excerpt from the "Laubach Way To English"
It is important to recognize differences in cultural patterns so that you can understand your learner's background and beliefs. It might be helpful to read a bit about your students' native country or culture. Not only will this help you understand your student better, but it will also allow you to help your student adjust to our culture.

In conclusion, talk to your student about it! Opening up a dialogue and asking them what they find difficult about living in America will bring your relationship closer and make your student feel more comfortable with you. This dialogue will show your student that you understand that there is more to adjusting to a new country than just learning the language.

Happy Tutoring!
