This post explores different ways to make the most of your learner's learning style and help them become successful learners. Try these techniques and activities to help your musical learners.
In this post, I will pinpoint learning activities which will appeal to your musical learners. These learners often prefer using sounds and music to learn.
My American friend Ari Yaccarino is one of them. He is the husband of my Russian friend Kristina. Ari is working hard to master the Russian language. He likes to learn Russian through songs. Kristina teaches him kids' songs. Besides Kristina's tutoring sessions, Ari is taking an online class with a professor of the Russian language. Ari chose that professor among other candidates because her method of teaching is based on songs as well. Ari sometimes surprises us by singing very old Russian songs. Those songs were picked up by Ari's professor deliberately to teach basic conversational phrases, like "How are you?" "Hi", and "Bye".
Ari just completed his Masters in ESL at Boston University. His dream is to start an ESL school which would concentrate on students' musical and language development. Ari is a great singer as well. He wants to create a method which involves both music and language to develop students' language skills. Ari plays saxophone, guitar, and Spanish and Indian guitars as well. I observed his ESL classes while he was teaching in Kaplan. Besides using music for teaching students, Ari likes to tap to develop students' phonetic skills, or while managing students.
If Ari was my learner, I would invite him to write songs about certain topics, set a poem to music, or use rhythm and clapping to memorize things. Also I would encourage him to listen to CDs that teach concepts like the alphabet, parts of speech, countries, and animals. Some other activities and techniques a musical learner like Ari would enjoy are adding sounds effects to stories, playing a music instrument, attending performances, and making audio and video projects.
When you appeal to your learner's learning style, you will make your tutoring sessions more enjoyable and accessible to your learner.
